  • The purpose of UNESCO is to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter of the United Nations.
  • To realize this purpose the Organization will:
    1. Collaborate in the work of advancing the mutual knowledge and understanding of peoples, through all means of mass communication and to that end recommend such international agreements as may be necessary to promote the free flow of ideas by word and image;
    2. Maintain, increase and diffuse knowledge.

The Netherlands National UNESCO Commission (NUC) has been founded in 1947. After various reorganizations it was reestablished in 1994.

The NUC is led by:

  • the mission and tasks of UNESCO, laid down in its Constitution and collectively formulated by the governments of the member states in the medium term plan and the programme;
  • its national role, which is stipulated in the UNESCO's Charter for National Commissions and the Koninklijk Besluit (royal decree) of the Dutch government. NUC functions as agency of liaison between the Netherlands Government and UNESCO. On one hand the NUC has to monitor the implementation of the mental legacy of UNESCO. On the other hand NUC has to promote the admission of Dutch mental legacy in UNESCO's programme and thus will be circulated worldwide;
  • the perception of its members about the social necessity and the innovative merits of activities.

The maximum number of commission members is eleven. After every General Conference of UNESCO the NUC makes a plan for its activities in the next two years. The programme and the budget need approval of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The commission reports annually about its activities and policy.

The NUC has installed study groups for education, culture, physics, social sciences and communication and information.
